The Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County will once again host Christmas Candlelight Tours of the Governor John Wood Mansion in December. The event is scheduled on two consecutive weekends – December 13-14 and December 20-21- and all area residents are invited to tour the home and enjoy this popular seasonal tradition free of charge.
The beautiful Greek Revival home of John Wood, Illinois’ 12th governor, is filled with Wood family heirlooms and other period furnishings and will be decorated for the holidays. The evening will also feature music of the season and light refreshments. Docents will be available to answer questions about the Mansion and its furnishings.
The theme this year is Historic Houses of Lincoln’s Illinois in honor of the 2018 book written by Erika Holst, curator of Decorative Arts and History at the Illinois State Museum. The book features 22 houses, including the John Wood Mansion and the Dr. Richard Eells House which are pictured on the cover.
The Candlelight tours will leave from the Visitors Center next to the Mansion at 425 South 12th Street, Quincy. Tours are scheduled every 20 minutes and will run from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. The Mansion Gift Shop will also be open in the Visitors Center and guests can check out new holiday gift items and books, including Historic Houses of Lincoln’s Illinois. All Candlelight Tours are open to the public, but reservations are recommended.
On Friday, December 13, popular local singer-songwriter-guitarist Kayla Obert will perform contemporary and classic holiday music. Violin students from Javaux Music School, will be featured on Saturday, December 14. The students range in age from 10 to 17 and play classical, fiddling, folk and pop music along with Christmas tunes.
Zeke and Carol Howerter will perform on Friday, December 20. Carol will be featured playing the 1875 Magnussen & Company parlor organ and the 1844 melodeon housed in the mansion’s spacious dining room. She will also accompany Zeke, who will sing traditional holiday music. Then Saturday, December 21, Jerry Wagner, Jillian Wagner Miller and Friends will present a varied program of traditional Christmas music.
The event is sponsored by the Oakley-Lindsay Foundation. For reservations, contact the HSQAC office at 217-222-1835.
