The much-anticipated cemetery tours at Woodland, sponsored by the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County, will run three Saturdays in October beginning on October 12. Join us on the 12th for a visit to Woodland’s serene and peaceful hilltop mausoleum. Reminiscent of a Greek temple, this Classical Revival style granite building was constructed in 1926-27 at the south end of the cemetery, 1020 South Fifth Street. The self-guided tour will begin at the door of the mausoleum. Anytime between 5:30 and 7:30 you may start your individual tour using a map to guide you to the crypts indicated. Docents will be on hand to give directions and answer questions. Information and a map to find the crypts will be provided.
The last two Saturdays of the month, October 19 and 26, will feature the Society’s traditional tours with period-dressed interpreters at gravesites. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of Congressional ratification of the 18th Amendment making the sale of liquor illegal in January of 1920, the tours will explore local happenings prior to and during the Prohibition years. Our theme for these two Saturday tours is “The Underground World of Prohibition: Saloons, Stills, Secrets, and Silence.” Intriguing and haunting stories of distillers and brewers, tavern owners, bootleggers, and police raids will be featured. The tours will begin every thirty minutes starting at 5:30 through 7:30. The last tour will be at 7:30.
If you wish to reserve a specific time slot for the traditional tours on October 19 and 26, please call 217-222-1835 for reservations. Tickets are also available at the cemetery gate. All tickets are $15 for this annual fundraising event.
