Lincoln Scholar to Headline Inaugural Rinella Memorial Lincoln Lecture
QUINCY, IL, September 3, 2019—Harold Holzer, one of America’s pre-eminent Lincoln historians and biographers, will be the inaugural speaker for the “Samuel C. Rinella Jr. Memorial Lincoln Lecture Series” in Quincy in October.
The first annual Rinella Lecture will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, October 25, at the Mary Ellen Orr Auditorium at John Wood Community College in Quincy. The event will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium lobby. The reception and lecture will be free and open to the public.
Holzer has entitled his Quincy presentation, “Covering the Great Debates: Lincoln, Douglas, the Press, and the Legacy.” It is the focus of his recent and highly acclaimed book, “Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion.” It is a superbly researched and masterfully written study of Lincoln’s understanding of the importance of the press and how he was first to use it to speak directly to the people.
