The LINCOLN IN THE DISTRICT Festival to be held on Saturday, June 11, will celebrate Quincy’s Lincoln story and focus on the life and times of Abraham Lincoln, what he would have seen and who he knew in the Quincy area.

The Lincoln-era event will be held in Washington Park from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will feature living history activities, craft demonstrations, period music, re-enactors, food, and fun.

The festival will include interactive demonstrations of crafts such as broom-making, yarn spinning, tatting and more. Six living history character portrayals will include Lincoln friends, a Civil War hospital, Dr. Eells, Senator Stephen Douglas, a confectioner, and a photographer. A souvenir album will be available.

Lincoln impersonator, George Buss of Freeport, IL, will step back in time at the Square he once knew, mingle with the crowd, read to children in a Lincoln-era school house setting and host political chat sessions.

Highlights will include surrey carriage rides around the square beginning at noon; a Civil War field embalming presentation; Native American crafts, dance and drumming; leather making; children’s toys; the Lost Prairie Sutlery; and basket weaving. The International Folk Dance Ensemble, made up of forty dancers from Brigham Young University, will be featured in a presentation at noon. Lincoln Folk Singers and a dulcimer player will be performing throughout the day.

Participating Lincoln-related sites near the square include the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Interpretive Center at 128 N. 5th Street, the History Museum at 332 Maine and the home of abolitionist Dr. Eells at 415 Jersey Street.

Lincoln in the District is an Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area event.  It is being organized by Quincy’s Lincoln Legacy, our local Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition working group.
