Likes Lecture Series Begins June 6


Pittsfield, IL – The annual Marvin J and Thomas Leo Likes Lecture Series will take place each Tuesday evening in June at 7 PM at Sprague’s Kinderhook Lodge near Barry.  These lectures are free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

The lecture series is sponsored by the New Philadelphia Association with the cooperation of Sprague’s Kinderhook Lodge.  This year’s Lecture Series is being coordinated by NPA board member Marynel Corton.  She can be reached by telephone at 217-335-2716 or by email at

This year’s schedule of speakers includes:

June 6 – Dr. Joseph Galloy will speak about the work at Brooklyn, Illinois, a community across the river from St. Louis, which was very active in the Underground Railroad.  Dr. Galloy is the Research Coordinator for the American Bottom Field Station (Fairview Heights, Illinois) of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey.  Joe has been very involved in archeological work and support of this town.
June 13- Bob Evans, president of the Pike County Historical Society will present a program regarding President Lincoln’s two secretaries, John Hay and John Nicolay, and their strong ties to Pike County.

June 20- New Philadelphia Association members will present several different subjects detailing current and past activities.  Dr. Chris Fennell will speak regarding several topics, including a planned archeological dig in 2018 and awards NPA has received.

June 27- We will have a musical program with entertainment and education regarding period music from the time of New Philadelphia. The program will be led by Dr. Sharon Graf.  Dr. Graf, a professor at University of Illinois at Springfield, is an ethnomusicologist and champion old-time fiddler.
