Join us on Saturday, October 12th, for a visit to Woodland Cemetery’s serene and peaceful hilltop Mausoleum. Reminiscent of a Greek temple, this Classical Revival style granite building was constructed in 1927, at the south end of Woodland Cemetery, 1020 South Fifth Street. For this first of our annual cemetery tours, sponsored by the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County, the tour will begin at the door of the Mausoleum, with self-guided tours to “visit” the burial vaults of some well and lesser known Quincy citizens. Anytime between 5:30 and 7:00 you may start your individual tour using a map to steer you to the burial vaults indicated, where you will learn something of these citizens’ lives and experiences. Docents will be on hand to give directions and answer questions.
The last two Saturdays of the month, October 19 and 26, will feature the Society’s traditional tours with period-dressed interpreters at gravesites. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of Congressional ratification of the 18th Amendment making the sale of liquor illegal in January of 1920, the tours will explore local happenings prior to and during the Prohibition years. Our theme for these two Saturday tours is “The Underground World of Prohibition: Saloons, Stills, Secrets, and Silence.” Intriguing and haunting stories of distillers and brewers, tavern owners, bootleggers, and police raids will be featured. The tours will begin every thirty minutes starting at 5:30 through 7:30.
If you wish to reserve a specific time slot for the traditional tours, please call 217-222-1835 for reservations. Tickets are also available at the cemetery gate. All tickets are $15 for this annual fundraising event.
