Libational Handbook to the Quincy Area +5 Self-Guided Mini Crawls
Quincy enjoys a long and torrid love affair with liquor and its various charms, dating from 1837 when the first brewery was established. It used to be said that there was a bar on every corner… and a church on every other. Both providing camaraderie, a sense of community, and confession. The city currently has 145 dram licenses on record, 99 of which are bars open to the public. The number fits nicely, given the old folk tune “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall” (oddly popular with children on long school or scouting bus trips in the mid-20th century). “Dram” is a form of Scottish speech, meaning a small drink of whiskey or other spirits….”a wee dram to ward off the winter chill”. Traditionally, a dram shop was a shop where spirits were sold by the dram, a small unit of liquid. The oldest operational bar is thought to be the Silver Moon Tavern– a small cottage really, on Quincy’s North side. From vintage neighborhood haunts to new swanky spots, we think you’ll enjoy 99 Watering Holes. Come back often to experience an alternate “mini crawl” or discover your own personal favorites. Feel free to share your pics & most loved drinks along the way with us. #99wateringholesquincy
