Begin with a Butter Streusel Danish from Quincy's oldest bakery, grab a Braunschweiger Sandwich from a beloved 1948 corner deli, and end with a warming nightcap at The Ratskeller -- an underground German bar in the historic Dick Brothers Brewery Complex. Featured Recipe > Hummingbird Cake {a close cousin of Italian Cream Cake}, is a Quincy Service League classic. The nonprofit volunteer organization was formed in 1938, providing generous community support along with a Holiday Gift Show, where this heavenly cake makes its appearance annually (2022 show: Nov 19-20). Enjoy!
Cake:
- 1 c. butter
- 2 c. sugar
- 5 egg yolks
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 sm. can coconut
- 1 c. chopped nuts
- 5 egg whites, stiffly beaten
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Cream butter & sugar. Beat until smooth. Add egg yolks; beat well. Combine flour & baking soda. Add to creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Stir in vanilla. Add coconut & nuts. Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour batter into three greased & floured 8-inch cake pans. Bake at 350 for 25 min. Cool & frost with Cream Frosting.
Cream Frosting:
- 1 (8-oz) pkg. cream cheese, softened
- 1 lb. powdered sugar
- ½ c. butter, softened
- 1 c. chopped pecans
Cream together cheese, powdered sugar, butter and pecans. Frost cake.
