Built in 1835 for prominent physician and abolitionist, Dr. Richard Eells, it is estimated that hundreds of enslaved people channeled through the Eells house. The storied grounds were the hub of many significant historic events in the city and nation, including the sixth Lincoln-Douglas Debate of 1858. In 2023, the facility received a full renovation and is now outfitted with five new interactive video exhibits, including The Turning Point, revealing the hidden history about one of America’s most iconic presidents. Built on the site where Augustine Tolton’s first Solemn High Mass occurred in Quincy upon his return as America’s first African American Priest. When no other seminary in the US would accept Augustine because of his race, several Quincy priests outlined a study plan for him. In 1878 St. Francis College (now Quincy University) enrolled Augustine. Augustine proceeded on as a seminarian to the Propaganda in Rome and was ordained at St. John Lateran Basilica. There is a plaque on the south side of the church building. Augustine returned to Quincy as a missionary and celebrated his first Solemn High Mass in the community at St. Boniface in 1886.

Quincy’s southside German district was once home to one of the largest U.S. breweries. Dick Brothers Brewery was founded in 1857, built over elaborate underground springs and caverns, which still exist today. The first German migrants settled primarily in this area, accumulating approximately 10,500 in number from 1840-1870. Today the Brewery offers tunnel tours, a museum, event spaces, and the Ratskeller Bar. Each September, the block welcomes the lively festivities of Oktoberfest (https://www.quincyrotary.org).

An 1835 log cabin, livery and visitor center are also onsite; the Mansion is open for tours and hosts the annual Christmas Candlelight Tours.

Perched upon the Mississippi River bluffs, the Villa Kathrine was built in 1900 for Quincy native, George Metz, and his 200-lb pooch, Bingo. It features a Mosque of Thais minaret & interior courtyard replica with marble mosaic reflecting pool & balcony. Serving as an interpretive center along the Great River Road, the grounds offer prime eagle viewing as the magnificent birds migrate to the surrounding trees annually. Today, the Villa is a touring museum and Quincy’s Tourist Info Center as well as SeeQuincy offices. Bike Quincy: Check out up to two Trek bikes or a tandem for free. Reservations recommended.
